Saikano Review

Today I'm going to take a look at an anime series called "Saikano (The Last Love Song on this Planet)".  I hope you'll enjoy my review~!  If you want to skip straight to my recommendation just check the very bottom of this post.  Don't worry, I will be marking any spoilers so that I won't accidentally ruin anything for you.  If you have read or watched this series I'd love to hear your thoughts as well, in the comments below.

General Overview

This is a short series, only 13 episodes, so expect it to move a bit quickly.  To me this was a good thing as it allowed us to jump right into the plot with no chance of pointless filler episodes.  The art style might take a little getting used to, but it grew on me.  They appear to constantly blush, once they *actually* blush, though, you'll see the difference and notice that its just part of the art style.  It is called "The Last Love Song on this Little Planet" for a reason as the plot entwines war and romance.  We follow Shuuji and Chise as they attempt to have a normal relationship during an ongoing war.  However this is just the tip of the iceberg as we quickly find out that Chise is actually a experimental government weapon who must fight in each raid.  Being so shy and clumsy, no one would expect this of her, and all she wants to do is find love before the end.  These two struggle through many problems; ranging from the usual relationship trust issues to terrible issues involving her transformation into a weapon and involvement with the government. 

We are also introduced to a few other characters who play big roles in this short story.  Akemi is the childhood friend of both Chise and Shuuji and is the one who initially pushed Chise to ask Shuuji out.  Atushi is Shuuji's best friend who has a crush on Akemi and eventually decides to join the military to try and protect his loved ones.  Tetsu is a commanding officer that works with Chise and Fuyumi is one of Shuuji's past flames so to speak.  Of course the stories involving these four go deeper than my summary here, but this is the non-spoiler section so that's the best you get for now.  We also meet a few more classmates as well as parents and government officials, but their roles are minor in comparison.  If you watch the OVA you get one more important character named Mizuki, who was the first experimental weapon.  The music in this series was good, it didn't stand out to me as amazing but it certainly wasn't bad either.

We never get a lot of detail about the war that has been going on since this series is meant to focus on the relationships of the people involved and the tragedy of it all.  However if Saikano leaves you hungering to learn a little more about the weapons and the war, there are 2 OVA episodes that touch on those topics a bit more.  As a bonus you also get to see what Chise was up to some of the times when she was apart from Shuuji on military missions.  Overall this series is extremely emotional and can really tug at your heart strings.  Interestingly it handles the romance from the males point of view and this really helps it to appeal to both genders; I know multiple men who don't normally watch romance that really love this series.  So as you see, I think that the plot and character development in this series is very well done.  Its a Seinen, meaning it is targeted towards older male audiences for the most part.  I'd say that either gender can enjoy this as long as they are mature, though.

Alright, lets talk a bit about the details in this spoiler section.  Turn away now if you plan to watch the series, because this will ruin it for you.

I loved the theme of love here, considering that their love is literally the only thing in the entire series that survives the end of the world.  I'm a sucker for love conquering all, I admit.  Of course the ending is a bit odd, even odder in the manga when she turns into a ship of some sort.  As I mention later I cried many times throughout the series for oh so many reasons.  It also touched some really sensitive spots for me with a few plot points.  Specifically the fact that they each sort of.. kind of.. cheat one each other?  The trust issues, knowing whats going on behind the scenes, but still feeling that love and trying so hard to make it work is all so realistic for me.

Akemi loving Shuuji but still staying on the sidelines so that he and Chise can be together was also a great part of the plot.  Watching her confess her feelings and die in his arms while he is in tears really got to me, I felt terrible for her and admired her at the same time.  The girlfriend of the guy who dies in the first episode also surprises me by trying to avenge him and never forgetting her love for him even though she tries to appear as if she has moved on.  Tetsu and Fuyumi's whole ordeal and the fact that all they wanted to do was see each other before the end despite being less than loyal to one another was another depressing bit.  As was Atushi fighting for Akemi even though she never really loved him, it was his delusion.

Recommendation / Afterthoughts

This is a series that I highly recommend, I'd personally give it a 8.5 out of 10.  Definitely give it a chance if you can, though I'd warn against doing so if you are currently feeling depressed (it would probably only make you feel worse in that case).  Expect maturity, there are sexual scenes that are handled well (they don't show too much but let you know what is going on) and the situations and emotions are all quite mature as well.  There are many mixed reviews for this series out there.  It seems to me that a lot of people complain that the main characters cried too much.  Personally I feel that if they *didn't* cry that much in the situations that they were put into then well.. they'd be a bit unrealistic or heartless.  Heck, I cried during almost every episode!  Then again I'm a bit of a wuss, a better example would be that my boyfriend even cried once or twice which is extremely rare for him.  There are certainly some cute scenes and funny moments as well despite the depressing plot. 

A few aspects are unrealistic (the ending and her turning into such a weapon come to mind) but every other aspect is quite realistic.  I feel that those things were blown out of proportion on purpose to add to the drama and emotions involved.  I truly related to and enjoyed watching them grow more mature and change over time throughout the series as well.  You can see Shuuji overcome some of his indecisiveness and Chise become more outspoken about what she wants.  If you like to be emotionally connected with the series and characters that you watch then this anime is for you.  I believe that the manga is pretty much the same with a slightly different ending, if you'd prefer reading over watching.  (But I'm not 100% sure!)

Kuroshitsuji Prop Plus Petit Review

Hey there, guys~ Today I will be doing my first anime figure review on a set that I got a week or so ago. I hope you enjoy the photos I have taken as well as the review because this is a super cute set. Note that you can click on any of the photos below in order to see a larger image.

Let me introduce to you the Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) Prop Plus Petit Volume 1 figure set by Bandai:

I have to say that I am pretty happy with this set. I knew from the start that they were going to be a bit small, about 2 inches tall including the stand, but that works well with chibi-fied characters like these. Since Kuroshitsuji is one of my favorite series I was eager for this to arrive in the mail. Even more eager seeing as all I had to pay was shipping (Thank you to the Buyers Reward program at Justmanga.com). There is no assembly required other than attaching them to their stands.

As you can see this set comes with 3 Sebastians, 3 Ciels, Grell, William T. Spears, and Lau. Each also has a small accessory that doubles as a keychain (a very clever and cute idea). It also appears that each stand has a different phrase written on it in Japanese, but I cannot read Japanese so sadly I can't really give my thoughts there. I did smile at Grell's stand having a little star by the word "Death" written in English, though. That and the facial expressions they chose for the characters, those made me smile as well~

The figures themselves are made well enough considering their size in my opinion. Some of the faces look a little off to me, but then again that might also be the style of the little chibi faces, so it isn't a huge deal to me. The glasses on William and Grell also seemed a bit off, but meh. It looks like this set sells at various stores between $35 and $40. Seeing as you get 9 figures that isn't so bad, but they are also small as I said, so it really depends on how much you like the series and the figures themselves.

Next up are 2 normal Ciels and 1 bettime Ciel~ These come with keychains of his precious ring.

William has a book, Grell has his chainsaw/death scythe, and Lau... a bong. xD

Alrighty then~ Now I want to say a few more things about this set before wrapping up here. It is definitely cute, but I had some personal pet peeves about it. The first thing I wondered was why we needed 3 of each for Sebastian and Ciel. I understand that if you were buying them as random trading figures that you'd have a better chance for the main characters, but I thought that 2 would be sufficient for that. Instead I would have included 2 other characters so that there was more varaiety in the set. (I would have went with Elizabeth and the Undertaker if it were up to me, because Volume 2 of this figure set still leaves them out.) Second was just a minor thing; I feel that it would have been cool if each Ciel and Sebastian came with a different keychain rather than the same ones. So, these pet peeves aside I'm still happy with the set and would reccomend it to fans of this series.

Nana Review

Today I'm going to take a look at an anime/manga series called "Nana" by Ai Yazawa. I hope you'll enjoy my review~! If you want to skip straight to my recommendation just check the very bottom of this post. I'll keep it tidy by splitting it up into sections. And don't worry, I will be marking any spoilers so that I won't accidentally ruin anything for you. If you have read or watched this series I'd love to hear your thoughts as well, in the comments below.

General Overview

Before we jump into my thoughts and into the heart of the review, I'll write up an overview for those of you who may not be familiar with this series.

Nana follows the lives of two young women who happen to share the same name, you guessed it- Nana. They meet on the subway their way to Tokyo, each chasing their dreams so to speak. These two main characters appear to be quite different on the outside but become close friends and roommates through a series of events. Nana Osaki is after fame and won't stop until shes a well known punk rock singer. Nana Komatsu is a little more confused about her goals, but chasing after true love is certainly one that she knows. Nana O. later affectionately nicknames Nana K. "Hachi" or "Hachiko" due to her puppy-like tendencies as well as her loyalty. Many other characters are introduced as the series go on and by the end you'll know each one of them very well. Its a slice of life type of series and is realistic in many aspects.

As the series begins the two Nanas are 20 years old, the other characters are mostly around this age as well. Soon after moving in with Hachi, Nanas old band mates come to visit and claim that they want to keep supporting her and shooting for success. Hachi becomes Blast's fan overnight after watching them play in her apartment and from that point on supports them in any way possible. Later on we will be entering into a bit of a "battle of the bands" between Blast and Trapnest (The band Ren leaves for in the very first volume) as well.  Hachi appears clingy and weak while Nana appears strong and mysterious, and if you pick up this series you will be watching their lives unfold.  I'm afraid I can't sum up most of the plot in a simple overview, quite a bit happens within the lives of these two Nanas.

First I'd like to take a step back and look at the art in this series. Ai Yazawa certainly has a unique style of art. Some may love it and some.. not so much, but my suggestion would be to give it a chance. It really grew on me and I love that it stands out from a lot of other art styles that I have seen. It is very josei/shoujou like with a touch of punk style. Its a mixture of smooth and heavy lines so to speak and the character's expressions always come across well.

I want to take a moment here and point out that I have seen a lot of negative reviews from people who have found this series to be either boring or depressing. As for boring, this will depend on what genre/type of series that you like. If you don't like slice of life or realism then you may well be bored and shouldn't bother with this series. As for the depression factor I cannot deny that this series has quite a few depressing turns. In my opinion that makes it worth it because we get to see how each of these issues are handled by the characters, and because real life is not always happy. I found that there were still happy parts and that during the depressing parts characters still stood out and were strong in their own ways.

Of course if you are easily depressed or easily put in a bad mood, you may want to skip this series. If you are anything like me then you may give it a try and become emotionally invested. I needed to finish the series because I fell for the amazing characters. Kudos to Ai Yazawa, her character development skills are amazing. She takes realism to a level that I haven't seen many manga-ka able to reach in that her characters are so complex.

Plenty of things happen in this series that made my heart sink. Unfortunately the realism is one thing that I love about this series. As depressing as the plot twists were, they only served to make their lives seem that much more real. I warn you again, stop reading now if you don't want to see major spoilers. Skipping to just past the next image will put you in a safe place once again.

I rooted for Nana and Ren from the very beginning when Ren left for Trapnest, before I ever knew that they would get back together. Watching the two of them try to make it as a couple while hitting so many bumps in the road was tough. They eventually began to drift apart a bit and just as you think they are about to meet up and work it out, Ren dies in a car accident. To top it off the birthday gift he had in his car for Nana gets delivered to her from beyond the grave so to speak. All of this was too much for me, and I certainly became emotional as I read it. It made me realize that you should work out your problems as they arise and appreciate what you have because you never know when you might not have it anymore.

Now for Hachi. After being cheated on by Shoji (even though I understood this from his point of view and ended up not really blaming him since she was being so selfish in that relationship), I had begun to root for her and Nobu. It was a happy time to watch her and Nobu's puppy love grow and the whole cast of characters seemed to be happy about it. Unfortunately, Hachi's choice to have a one night stand with her long time Trapnest idol, Takumi, leaves her pregnant with his child. Next was the difficulty of watching Takumi and Hachi try to form a relationship that felt fake all around, simply for the sake of the child and being a "family". This drives a rift into the relationship between the two Nanas as well.

Looking at other characters I also felt attached to Shin and Reira's relationship and was sad when they were "torn apart" too. Happy couples are hard to come by here in this series, it seems. On top of everything I found it really hard to hate or dislike any of the characters because of how much we learn about each one. For example I wanted to hate Takumi so badly, but I can't quite bring it to that level once I look at his twisted views and past.

I admit that I was pretty depressed by all of these things, but I feel like I was learning quite a bit at the same time. Life can be really harsh, but you should keep pushing onward for your dreams. Hopefully you won't end up clinging to shattered pieces of said dreams in the end.

Anime Version Vs. Manga Version

The anime version of Nana followed the manga so closely that it isn't even worth making a new blog post for it. This is a very good thing in my opinion; to many series veer off of their original plots in their anime counterparts. However there is one key part of the anime that you can't experience within the manga and that is the music. Now music is something that we all may have imagined a bit differently, this I realize. So for me personally, the singers that stepped up for Nana and Reira's voice actors did an amazing job. The bands each sounded pretty much like what I had imagined or expected from reading the manga and I really enjoyed the musical aspect of this series. If music is very important to you then I'd say to go for the anime over the manga, however the manga does continue on for longer than the anime. It would be easy to find where the anime left off and start reading from there if you chose to.

Other than that the anime keeps the same art style and looks great visually. Its always great to see your favorite characters come to life in the animated version, to hear their voices as well. (Quick note here, I only watched the Subbed version. I don't generally watch the dubbed version of anything anymore.)

Recommendation / Afterthoughts

This is by far one of my favorite series, period. It has everything that I look for these days and more. Most importantly, in my opinion, is that it is very mature. I don't just refer to the sex scenes here, I refer to the whole story and all of its characters. Nothing is sugar coated. If you easily become emotional then bring some tissues. I'm willing to bet you that at least once during this series you will realize something about yourself, someone close to you, or about life in general. Granted, younger audiences may not pick up on these "life lessons" since the series is aimed at an older audience. I believe that Nana is very well written (and has a unique art style to boot). It will cause you to reflect on your own life, as well as show you why it's never a good idea to judge a book by it's cover. After each volume (or episode), you'll learn something new about the characters and their personal lives, and you'll beg for more. Now it isn't always somber and serious, either. There are plenty of happy and cute scenes, as well as a few chibi moments and such as well. One more tidbit to throw in is that I like how the sex scenes are done. They aren't all out like a hentai, and yet they are there and they don't try to hide them. Another addition to the realism in my opinion, I'm tired of manga trying to skip over or cut away with these scenes. Adult relationships will involve this, it can be important to your growth as a couple and to other aspects of the story as well.

This gets a 9.5 out of 10 from me (despite the depressing turns that it takes later on), and I highly recommend it. I'd give it a chance, even if the art style or the slice of life aspect turns you off a bit. I will say, however, that it is aimed a little more towards a female audience. So guys, keep that in mind if you do give it a try; it may or may not be your taste. If you end up unable to relate with any of the characters (by this I'm including more than just the 2 Nanas) then you may not enjoy the series much or agree with my rating. You should also keep in mind the fact that the manga-ka has been ill and unable to finish the series for some time now. As far as I know she still intends to finish it whenever she is able, so I still recommend the series and will post another review whenever the final chapters are released.

Tokyopop Is Closing

I'm sure that most otaku, at least ones that love their manga just as much as their anime, have heard the bad news about Tokyopop. Just in case you haven't heard, the US branch of Tokyopop is shutting down which means say goodbye to all the Tokyopop manga. New releases have been stopped, old series are not going to be in print any longer, and we still haven't heard their word on what will happen to the licenses of their many series. May 31st is the official closing date, soon the end will be upon us.

Their website, www.tokyopop.com, has been shut down and now re-directs to their facebook page. Recently they had yard sales at their headquarters to get rid of the rest of their stock and have been holding some final contests for their fans. The one thing that has us all pretty confused and some of us pretty enraged is how they ignore all questions relating to the future of their series. Being such a huge player in the manga revolution/industry they have hold over a ton of series. I'd assume personally that the very popular series (such as Fruits Basket, the CLAMP titles, the many .hack series, etc.) will get picked up by other publishers. My fear is for the less popular series, It would be terrible for them to end up in limbo and out of reach for all of their US fans.

The next question that raises in my mind is what will happen to all of the Tokyopop exclusive titles like Princess Ai. Series that were produced by Tokyopop hand in hand with the artists and writers sound to me like they are in the most danger. With no more US branch who will be supporting these original series? Rising Stars of manga is no more as well, which led to some great American-made manga series such as Re:Play. Will other publishers give these rising stars their chance to share their series with the world like Tokyopop did? This particular question means a lot to me, seeing as my ultimate dream is to create my series that has been in my head for some time now and have it published.

Take this chance to grab all the Tokyopop manga that you can from bookstores both on and offline. They are already becoming harder to find in some cases and I'm sure that many of you would like to finish up some series before it is too late. Some places have them for sale and others jack up the prices, so shop around! But I do urge you to try and buy any volumes that you need as soon as possible. I got lucky and was able to finish all of the ones that were important to me.

With many series unfinished, leaving gaps in the fan's collections, and with many unanswered questions we say goodbye to Tokyopop. Looking at my collection of 505 manga I see so many Tokyopop books looking back at me. First Borders had to close down a lot of their stores, now this (granted that Borders closing may have affected Tokyopop in some way being that they sold a lot of their manga).

So what are your thoughts? I'm eager to hear from more fans out there. Was it that Tokyopop wasn't getting the license to many great series lately? The economy? What's next? Will the other manga publishers (Viz, Yen Press, DelRay, etc) stay in business? Do you blame manga scanslations and the sites that host them? I know I certainly do, to an extent. But I'll likely rant about that in future blog entry. Were they good to their fans, or had they failed them at some point or another? Maybe you never cared for many of the Tokyopop releases, or perhaps your collection is full of their prints. Either way I bid Tokyopop farewell and thank them for all that they have done up until this point. Some of my first manga were Tokyopop titles and they helped to fuel my craving for more anime and manga from the start.

**Edit** On Monday May 23 Tokyopop has posted their replies to the many questions that we fans have been dishing out via their Facebook page:
" TOKYOPOP -Our general absence on Facebook hasn't gone unnoticed, but it's mainly due to the fact that we were looking for answers to all of your questions too! Shutting down a publishing company like TOKYOPOP isn't exactly pulling a plug out of a wall, so please understand that it might take a little bit longer than usual before we get to your questions.

-Secondly, we're very grateful that even in these hard times, our fans still stand behind us. Of course, there are some rants here and there ... but we can't blame you for being emotional; so are we. It means a lot to us to still receive fan mail on a daily base and read all of your comments here in Facebook. It's good to know that even when TOKYOPOP is gone, the community will still remain.
-Thirdly, the unfinished/unpublished titles. What is going to happen to them? To be honest: it's out of our hands now. The licenses belong to the original Japanese creators, so it's up to them what to do with the series. They might pull the plug on some series, or find another publishing company to complete their series. The best thing that you can do is keep supporting the original creators, hoping that they'll here your cries like we did so many years ago.

Introduction

Hello Everyone, Rekki Here~ Time for my first post. =3

Now since this blog is going to focus more on anime/otaku culture I am going to steal this here first post to talk a little bit more about myself. Sure the about me thingy on the side says a little, but I'd like to introduce myself a bit more before jumping into all of the lovely posts that are sure to follow. I'll try to stay on topic for the most part here as well, though, and mostly talk about my "otaku life" (that covers quite a bit of my life though, bahaha).

First off my real life nickname is Lecky, so 'Rekki' is obviously a play on that. I am 22 years old at the time of this post and still live with my grandparents despite having graduated with my Bachelors degree in Animation. Economy/Job Market/Life Issues/BlahBlahBlah. I do take commissions for art (& more) through my personal website for the time being, though. Anywho I've also got a cute rat terrier named Rascal and an even cuter boyfriend named Patrick. <3 I'd say its been roughly 3 and a half years since we got together (The love, not the pup). As you may expect he is a fellow otaku and we happily share many dorky interests. From this point on in this post here if I type "we" then assume I refer to he and myself.

Lets see.. my ultimate dream is to have my own manga series, and an even more ultimate version of this dream would be for it to eventually be animated as well. Yes, I know that it won't be easy but I'm going to give it a shot nonetheless. Its something that has already been in my head, something that I work on from time to time when I can. Perhaps at some point you'll see me post about it, but don't hold your breath. I'm a bit paranoid about people stealing my ideas if I talk about it too much before getting it copyrighted. Still, if you stalk me around the net you'll see art of some of the characters at the very least.

Pokemon was my first anime and my obsession started around the age of 10. Ever since then my love for anime, manga, and the culture has grown more and more. I am also an avid collector, so that has been growing as well. More than anything else I collect manga but I also have a ton of anime DVDs, figures, plushies, and other random merchandise. We have attended Otakon every year since 2005/2006 and plan to start attending Katsucon as well (as soon as I can afford the hotel stay).

Some random facts about me: I love purple and black. I love 'gothic' styles (Vague term since I like a lot of the sub-cultures and such too). I prefer pirates over ninjas. I love pigtails. I am a bit nocturnal.
As far as music goes I like symphonic metal best along with some other forms of metal and rock. However I also enjoy techno/dance music a lot depending on my mood so my tastes clash a bit I guess. I'm super picky even with music that falls into these categories, too. Then again I think I'm a pretty picky person in general. Despite how opposite it sounds after typing that I am also a very open person in general. It takes a whole heck of a lot to offend me and even if I disagree with you I'm not likely to take it personal.

Alrighty then.. I think that's enough rambling about myself for now. I hope that was enough to satisfy anyone who was curious enough to see my blog and want to know more about me. If not.. uhm.. well.. you could ask my questions about myself in the comments for this post. I'll answer as long as it isn't *too* personal.
